(CNN) -- Gary Woodland hit a 67 in the final round of the Transitions Championship on Sunday to clinch his first PGA Tour title by one shot from fellow-American Webb Simpson.
Woodland, who began the year ranked 591st in the world, has rocketed up to 53rd in the rankings after his triumph in Florida.
The 26-year-old Kansas native secured victory with a 10-foot putt to hold par on the final hole, after a back nine which also included five birdies and three bogeys helped him to a final score of 15-under.
Overnight leader Justin Rose hit four successive bogeys in his final round to fall out of contention and eventually the Briton finished five shots off the pace.
Woodland will now play in his first Masters tournament, set to take place at Augusta in April, thanks to his victory on the Innisbrook course.
"I was very conservative this week," Woodland told the PGA Tour's official website.
"Laid back almost all day -- all four days -- and just tried to get the ball in the fairway, get it on the green and let the putter do the work.
"One thing that helped me was putting, and today it saved me. Luckily, it won me a golf tournament."
Rookie American Scott Stallings carded a 70 on Sunday to finish in third on 12-under, with the 25-year-old remaining in contention until the 16th hole when he double-bogeyed after finding water.
Brandt Snedeker completed an all-American top four on 11-under-par, with compatriots Marc Turnesa, Roland Thatcher, Chris Couch and Britain's Martin Laird finished alongside Rose in fifth place.
