(CNN) -- Honda's Casey Stoner has claimed pole for Sunday's United States MotoGP at the Brickyard in Indianapolis.

The Australian who leads Jorge Lorenzo by the 32 points in this year's world championship finished with a time of one minute, 38.850 seconds -- a new lap record.

American Ben Spies finished second with his Yamaha teammate Lorenzo coming in third.

Last year's winner Dani Pedrosa will start the race from fourth on the grid.

Stoner finds himself at the front of the grid for the seventh time this season and will be chasing his second win in the United States this year after winning the MotoGP at Laguna Seca at the end of July.

Italy's Andrea Dovizioso (Honda) will start Sunday's race in fifth place, with Yamaha's Colin Edwards in sixth.
