(CNN) -- A freak injury suffered by world number two Kim Clijsters has cast doubts over the Belgian's participation in the French Open, it was announced on Monday.
The Australian Open champion damaged an ankle while at her cousin's wedding party and is now set to have between four to six weeks on the sidelines.
It is a massive blow to the 2010 U.S. Open winner, who had already been forced to pull out of Belgium's Fed Cup semifinal against Czech Republic on April 16-17 due to shoulder and wrist problems.
The French Open is the second grand slam on the tennis calendar and is due to start at Roland Garros, Paris on May 22.
Injured Clijsters out of Fed Cup semifinals
The former world number one was a beaten finalist at Roland Garros in 2001 and 2003, but did not play in last year's event due to a build-up of fluid on her ankle.
"Kim's ankle is now completely immobilized and she can not use her foot for a few days," the 27-year-old's official website said.
"Kim faces a recovery of at least four to six weeks. Kim's presence in Paris is very uncertain. In the meantime Kim has to continue working on her recovery of a shoulder and wrist injury."
Clijsters had also pulled out of the WTA Tour event in Madrid, Spain on April 30 in an attempt to make sure she was fit for the clay court grand slam and had hoped to make a return in the Italian capital of Rome on May 9.
The Bree-born star has claimed back-to-back U.S. Open titles in addition to her January triumph at Melbourne Park since coming out of retirement in 2009.
Clijsters had initially ended her career in 2007 in order to raise for first child.
