(CNN) -- Juan Martin Del Potro is doubtful for this month's French Open because of the hip injury he sustained in last month's Estoril Open semifinal.

Del Potro tore a muscle in his left hip against Robin Soderling, an injury which forced the 22-year-old out of his quarterfinal with world number one Rafael Nadal in last week's Madrid Masters.

The Argentine returned home to Buenos Aires, where he underwent a series of tests and began a rehabilitation program on Monday.

"I will do all I can to play in Paris," Del Potro said in the statement. "I want to do things calmly without hurrying my return to the circuit."

A spokesperson for Del Potro also released a statement adding: "We still don't know how long it will take for Juan Martin to return to the circuit.

"But it is most probable that he won't get to play the second grand slam of the season at Roland Garros."

Del Potro's latest injury follows a considerable period of inactivity in 2010, during which the player was sidelined after undergoing wrist surgery.

Meanwhile, seventh seed Tomas Berdych is through to the third round of the Rome Masters after a 6-2 6-2 victory over Juan Monaco.

Frenchman Richard Gasquet, seeded 16th, also enjoyed a comfortable passage through to the next round, seeing off Russian Igor Andreev 6-1 6-2.

And in the women's section, French Open champion and second seed Francesca Schiavone reached the third round with a 6-3 6-1 success over American Christina McHale.
