(CNN) -- Sixteen people were killed in a plane crash Wednesday morning in Recife, Brazil, the country's air force said.
The twin engine Let L-410 aircraft, operated by Noar Airlines, took off from the Recife airport at about 6:50 a.m. (5:50 a.m. ET), the Brazilian air force said in a statement.
Upon take-off, the pilot reported an emergency and told authorities he would try to land on Boa Viagem beach. The plane crashed in a barren area between two neighborhoods near the beach, authorities said.
All 16 people on board the aircraft were killed, the air force said.
