(CNN) -- Hurricane Dora weakened to Category 1 strength as it continued to churn in the Pacific Ocean off the northwest coast of Mexico on Friday, the National Hurricane Center said.

Forecasters expect the hurricane to keep weakening and pass south of the Baja California Peninsula, but nonetheless a tropical storm warning was in effect for the area from Agua Blanca to Buenavista, including Cabo San Lucas, the center said.

Dora could weaken to a tropical storm by Friday night, the center said.

As of Friday morning, the hurricane was about 255 miles south of Cabo San Lucas and moving northwest at 9 mph.

It had maximum sustained winds of 90 mph.
