(CNN) -- Colombian salsa great Alvaro Jose Arroyo, known as Joe Arroyo, died Tuesday morning at a hospital where he was being treated for several health complications, his family said.
Arroyo, 55, had been hospitalized since June 27 at a clinic in Baranquilla, Colombia.
On the day of his death, it was announced that he was to be among the recipients of the Latin Recording Academy's Lifetime Achievement Award.
Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos mourned the loss, calling it on his Twitter account "a great loss for music and for Colombia."
