Kabul, Afghanistan (CNN) -- Three civilians and several insurgents were killed in Afghanistan on Saturday, NATO's International Security Assistance Force said.
An improvised explosive device planted by insurgents struck the civilians in southern Afghanistan. Along with the three deaths, another person was seriously wounded. Afghan and coalition forces also killed insurgents during operations in the south's Helmand province.
Afghan and U.S. forces, meanwhile, recovered weapons caches in Herat province, in the west, and Khost province in the east. Border police found 165 pounds, or 75 kilograms, of heroin in Kandahar province and detained one person.
