Beijing (CNN) -- An explosion ripped through a factory in southwest China belonging to Foxconn, a key manufacturer of Apple products, killing two people and injuring 16, local officials said.
Several hundred employees were working inside the building in Chengdu, which houses assembly lines for the popular iPad 2 tablets, when the blast occurred around 7 p.m. (7 a.m. ET), shattering windows and sending thick plumes of black smoke into the air, state media reported.
An initial police investigation has ruled out foul play, the Chengdu municipal government said in a statement.
All of the injured -- including three in serious condition -- were at local hospitals.
