Srinagar, Indian-Administered Kashmir (CNN) -- At least 18 persons were killed and 20 others were injured when a bus skidded off a road in the mountainous region of Kashmir, officials said.

The incident occurred in the Poonch district of Indian-administered Kashmir. Traffic accidents in Kashmir are common because of mountainous terrain, overcrowding in buses and bad road conditions.

A senior state government officer said the driver lost control of the vehicle when one of the tires burst. The injured were airlifted to a hospital in Jammu city, Pawan Kotwal, a government official in Jammu, told CNN.

India and Pakistan have long had territorial disputes over Kashmir and have fought wars over the territory.
