Baghdad, Iraq (CNN) -- Iraq opened the new year with bloodshed, as two police officials were shot dead in the capital, the Interior Ministry said.

Lt. Col. Ahsan Fadhil, an Interior Ministry official who was in charge of police checkpoints in Baghdad, was gunned down Saturday morning, as he was driving along an eastern highway.

Adel Khamas, a police commissioner, was killed when gunmen fired on his car in the Baladiyat neighborhood, also in eastern Baghdad.
