Baghdad, Iraq (CNN) -- Seven civilians were killed and 14 others wounded when a roadside bomb exploded by a bus carrying passengers in al-Maaqal district in northern Basra Sunday morning, police told CNN.
Among the dead and wounded were women and children, police said.
A local official said that he believed that a U.S. military convoy was the intended target. The bomb exploded just seconds after a military convoy passed, but struck the bus instead, Ali al-Maliki, head of the Basra provincial council's security committee told CNN.
Oil-rich Basra is about 550 km south of Baghdad.
