(CNN) -- Three people were killed in the Gaza Strip early Saturday morning during an Israeli airstrike, according to medics and a Hamas police spokesman.

The victims were three members of the military wing of Hamas, authorities said.

Israel Defense Forces confirmed the drone strike in the southern Gaza Strip, saying in a statement that "a Hamas terror squad" was the target "following the squad's intentions to execute kidnapping attacks during the upcoming Passover holiday in the Sinai Peninsula and Israel."
