Gaza City (CNN) -- Four people died and four others were injured when a tunnel collapsed near Rafah in southern Gaza Tuesday, Palestinian medical and security sources told CNN.

Tunnels along the Gaza-Egypt border are often used to smuggle supplies into Gaza to bypass Israel's blockade of the territory.

These tunnels have sometimes been targeted by the Israeli military, but an Israel Defense Forces spokesman said the IDF was not aware of the tunnel incident.
