(CNN) -- A car exploded near a military air force camp in the southern Yemeni port city of Aden, killing at least six soldiers and injuring others, a senior security official and witnesses said.

The car crashed directly at a governmental military vehicle on Saturday night, destroying various equipment, said the official, who is not authorized to talk to the media.

The attack took place as government forces were preparing to send reinforcement to Rofis, Abyan, after clashes with militants intensified over the past week, the official said.

Fierce clashes took place after the attack and hundreds of security forces are combing the area for suspects, eyewitnesses said.

"This is the second attack on security forces in the same area in more than a month," the official said.
