The death toll climbed to 34 following an explosion Friday at a market in Pakistan's tribal region, a senior government official said Sunday.

The deaths occurred when a suicide bomber on a motorcycle drove into a crowded market in Parachinar, a town in the Kurrum Agency, said Sahibzada Anis Khan, a government official who oversees the region.

The blast wounded 42 people, said Shahab Ali Shah, a government official of the Kurram Agency, one of the seven districts of Pakistan's volatile tribal region bordering Afghanistan.

The suicide bomber struck when people gathered in the market after their Friday prayer, Shah said.
