(CNN) -- American Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III will tee off at the U.S. Open next week after qualifying for the golf season's second major via an event in Columbus.
The 1997 PGA Championship winner carded two-under-par 139 in the 36-hole qualifier at the Scioto Country Club and Ohio State's Scarlet Course, enough to finish tied for sixth at Monday's sectional event.
The 48-year-old went straight from finishing equal 16th at the PGA Tour's Memorial Tournament on Sunday , his best result this season.
The 20-time PGA Tour winner, who also had to qualify for last year's tournament at Congressional, will play in his 23rd U.S. Open at San Francisco's Olympic Club.

"I seem to play well in the qualifying because I don't have a scoreboard to look at," he told the PGA Tour's official website. "You just play."
A total of 16 players qualified from the event in Ohio, including winner Charlie Wi and two-time PGA Tour winner Steve Marino.
"This is only my second one," said Wi, who also reached the 2009 U.S. Open at Beth Page Black. "It's not easy to get in."
Another notable qualifier is Casey Martin, who caused controversy in 1998 when he won the right to use a golf cart on the course due to a rare circulatory disorder in his right leg that restricts his ability to walk 18 holes.
He tied for 23rd that year but could not keep his PGA Tour card in 1999. Now 40, he went on to become coach of the University of Oregon golf team.
Martin finished Monday's round at Emerald Valley in Oregon in the dark, needing a five-foot par putt to avoid a playoff.
"I wanted to get it done because I need to sleep," he said. "I'm exhausted. I really just wanted to rest. I should not have putted, but I'm very glad I did."
Two big names to miss out at Scarlet were Love's compatriot Spencer Levin and South Africa's Rory Sabbatini -- both of whom led during last weekend's Memorial Tournament.
Both Levin and Sabbatini finished five over after posting scores of 146.

Despite personal problems and injuries in the past two years, the former world No. 1 is still a big drawcard with golf fans.
He completely overshadowed rising star Rickie Fowler in the final round, with his highly-rated playing partner slumping to a 12-over 84 after being in title contention.
Next week's U.S. Open will be played at San Francisco's Olympic Club, where a youthful Woods tied for 18th when the golf season's second major was played there in 1998.
