A Turkish military vehicle was attacked Thursday near the Aegean coastal town of Foca, leaving as many as two soldiers dead and nine wounded, the military said.

The vehicle was hit by explosives and the soldiers were then attacked by gunmen in the province of Izmir, the military said.

It was not immediately clear who was responsible for the attack that occurred early in the morning as the vehicle was on its way to a military base in the province of Izmir. The military referred to the attackers only as "terrorists."

Turkish state TV reported at least one soldier dead and four wounded.
