Indonesia is prone to frequent earthquakes

CNN  —

A 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck a rural area in Indonesia Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake struck near the city of Palu on the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia Saturday and the USGS estimates that the likelihood of damage or death was very low.

No tsunami warning had been issued.

The earthquake was felt and rattled the nerves of many but there were no reports of damage or injuries, said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho of the National Disaster Management Agency.

Indonesia is on the so-called Ring of Fire, an arc of fault lines circling the Pacific Basin that is prone to frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
