(CNN) -- Nick Watney put a poor season behind him to claim The Barclays Sunday, the first event of the lucrative FedEX Cup playoffs.
Watney also gave a nudge to United States Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III with a superb last day performance on the Bethpage Black Course at Farmingdale.
His closing two-under 69 in diffficult conditions gave him a three shot victory on 10-under 274.
Fellow American Brandt Snedeker finished in second place.

But overnight leader Sergio Garcia of Spain struggled to a four-over 75 as he bid to double up after winning the Wyndham Championship last week, a victory which sealed his European Ryder Cup place.
He tied for third alongside defending champion Dustin Johnson.
Love is due to name his 12, with four wild card picks, on September 4 for the match against Europe at Medinah, starting on September 28.
Newly crowned U.S. PGA champion Rory McIlroy had a closing 72 to tie for 24th, but Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson slumped to 76s to tie for 38th.
In other golf news, South Korean born New Zealander Lydia Ko became the youngest winner in the history of the LPGA Tour with a three shot victory in the Canadian Open Sunday.
Four months past her 15th birthday, Ko fired a five-under-par 67 to finish on 13-under-par 275 at the Vancouver Golf Club course.
South Korean Park Inbee finished second.
Ko is 16 months younger than Lexi Thompson, who was the previous youngest winner on the Tour at 16 years, eight months. Thompson won the Navistar Classic last year.
Ko is the U.S. Women's Amateur Champion and earlier this year won the New South Wales Open in Australia, while still only 14.
