Ricardo Vaz Te scores the winner for West Ham as QPR remain rock bottom

Despite a slew of expensive signings QPR are toiling after six matches

West Ham United striker Ricardo Vaz Te heaped more misery on Mark Hughes as his Queen’s Park Rangers side were beaten 2-1 at home to remain rock bottom of the English Premier League.

Vaz Te had put the visitors 2-0 to the good in the London derby at Loftus Road after winger Matt Jarvis put West Ham ahead within three minutes.

And though Adel Taraabt scored a brilliant goal to reduce the deficit in the second half the sending off of Samba Diakite stalled QPR’s momentum and ensured they prop up the table with just two points on the board.

Hughes’ side spent big before the season on players such as former Real Madrid midfielder Esteban Granero and South Korea international Ji-Sung Park but have gone six games without a victory.

A dejected Hughes told Sky Sports: “We were very poor, certainly in the first half, and we didn’t get anywhere near the level you need to get results in the Premier League.

“In the second half we made a better fist of it, Adel came on and scored a great goal but the sending off killed the momentum. We’re desperately disappointed, we can do much better than we did in the first half.”

Rangers got off to the worst possible start as Jarvis capitalized on a deflection inside the penalty area to nod past former Inter Milan goalkeeper Julio Cesar from a narrow angle.

Another cross caused panic in the QPR box half an hour later as Vaz Te volleyed home at the back post to double West Ham’s advantage.

Hughes brought on Taraabt and Diakite ten minutes into the second half and their arrival had an instant impact, as Taraabt fired a swerving shot into the top corner to give Rangers hope.

Djibril Cisse then forced a save from West Ham ‘keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen as QPR started to increase the pressure on their London neighbours.

But Diakite brought that to a halt when he picked up his second yellow card and was dismissed less than 20 minutes after coming on as a substitute.

West Ham’s third win of the campaign took the newly-promoted side up to seventh in the table and earned them glowing praise from manager Sam Allardyce.

He said: “We showed two sides of our team; one side was a great first half when we completely dominated the opposition, taking the game to QPR. It could have been more at halftime.

“Taraabt’s goal lifted the crowd in the second half and we had to show the other side of our character, good solid defending and working hard for each other.”
