London (CNN) -- Political thriller "Argo" stole the show in the major categories at the EE British Academy Film Awards in London on Sunday night.
The Iranian hostage drama directed by Ben Affleck picked up the BAFTAs for Best Film and Best Director.
"I feel like there must be some mistake," Affleck told CNN. "It's really thrilling. I mean I've never been to the BAFTAs before, I've never been nominated before, never even been invited before, nothing. So I feel like I am sneaking in under the gate. I'm just thrilled."
Affleck was also nominated for the Leading Actor award, but that prize went to Daniel Day-Lewis, the favorite not only of the bookies but of his peers, including fellow nominee Hugh Jackman.
"I met him at one of the awards ceremonies, and I was a little star struck," Jackman said. "Like (Marlon) Brando did in the '50s and then (Robert) De Niro, not is he the only best actor, he's changed acting."
It is the fourth BAFTA for Day-Lewis.
Actress Emmanuelle Riva, 85, made history by becoming the oldest person to win a BAFTA for her lead role in award-winning French film "Amour." She also showed her wisdom by staying away from the red carpet on a sleet- and snow-drenched London night.
One of the most popular awards of the night went to box-office blockbuster "Skyfall," which won the BAFTA for Outstanding British Film, a first for the 50-year-old Bond franchise.
The latest entry in the Bond franchise had eight nominations, but Stephen Spielberg's "Lincoln" led the field with 10 nods, followed by "Les Miserables" and "Life of Pi," which both received nine nominations.
British starlet Juno Temple, who most recently starred opposite Matthew McConaughey in "Killer Joe," won the EE Rising Star Award, which is decided by the public. EE is the sponsor of the awards.
The other winners were chosen by members of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.
