(CNN) -- High numbers of people in Mali continue to be uprooted from their homes two months after the French intervened there to counter the rise of Islamic militants, the U.N. refugee agency said on Friday.
"Despite improvements to the security situation in some areas, fear of returning home remains widespread," the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees said. It is seeing "large numbers of internally displaced people, while in surrounding countries the numbers of refugees are still high and in some cases increasing."
Of the estimated 430,000 people who have been uprooted by the crisis, more than 260,000 are still in Mali, and 170,300 are refugees, most in Mauritania, Burkina Faso and Niger, the agency said.
