- A suicide bomber kills 18 at a political site
- More than 50 were reported injured
- Provincial elections are slated for this month
- More than 163 people were killed in acts of violence in Iraq last month
(CNN) -- A suicide bomber detonated his vest inside an election campaign tent in central Baquba, Iraq, on Saturday, killing 18 and wounded 51, medical and police officials said.
A number of attacks have been recorded in recent weeks, as provincial elections approach across the country.
Still, the level of carnage has dropped considerably since the height of the sectarian violence in 2006 and 2007 that nearly tore Iraq apart.
The coming elections are slated for April 20 in 13 of Iraq's 18 provinces. Because of security concerns, elections in two provinces -- Anbar and Ninevah -- will be held in May.
Last month, more than 163 people were killed in violence across the country.
