(CNN) -- At least six people were killed and 24 others wounded in shootings and bombings across Iraq on Wednesday, police said.

Why are Iraq's Sunnis so upset?

Gunmen in Anbar province killed three police officers and police killed a gunman at a checkpoint. Car bombs in Kirkuk targeting a security checkpoint and a Kurdish political party killed one person and wounded 24 others. One person was killed when gunmen attacked a car in Baghdad.

Tensions between Sunni Arabs and Shiites in Iraq have been festering in recent weeks, and as a result, there's been an uptick of daily violence across the country.
