(CNN) -- At least nine people were killed and more than 70 were injured when two Toyota Corollas exploded in southern Afghanistan late Friday, a government official said.
Three police officers were among those killed in the blasts, which occurred in Kandahar city, Jawid Faisal, a spokesman for the governor of southern Kandahar province said.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility. The incident comes amid the Taliban's spring offensive.
It follows a day of carnage in Kabul on Thursday, when six Americans working with NATO's International Security Assistance Force were killed and many Afghans were killed and injured in an attack on a coalition convoy.
The explosives-packed vehicles detonated simultaneously Friday when an Afghan National Police vehicle was passing the area, Faisal said. A large number of people had gathered for a picnic and were leaving the site when the vehicles exploded, he said.
