A suicide attack on a provincial council headquarters in northern Afghanistan on Monday killed a top politician and at least 10 others, police said.
The attack took place outside the Baghlan provincial council compound killed council head Rasul Khan Mohsini. The compound is located in the provincial capital, Pul-e-Khumri. Others were wounded in the attack, which Taliban claimed responsibility for in a text message to CNN.
NATO’s International Security Assistance Force and President Hamid Karzai condemned the strike.
“We stand with the Afghan leadership in condemning the attack on the Baghlan Provincial Council, which killed many Afghan civilians,” said the ISAF commander, Marine Gen. Joseph F. Dunford. “Innocent civilians and public servants were killed and injured because of the insurgency’s indiscriminate use of suicide attacks. I offer my heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of those who were killed and injured in today’s attack.”
