(CNN) -- A 3-year-old girl was killed and at least a dozen people were injured Tuesday when a water line burst in western Rio de Janeiro, sending a powerful jet of water up into the air and flooding an entire neighborhood.

Brazilian television showed images of people wading through waist-high water, rescue workers in inflatable boats and houses that appeared to have crumbled in the flood.

The water company Cedae said it had temporarily shut off the water supply to the Campo Grande suburb and was investigating the cause of the rupture.

The governor's office said it would pay for hotels for the more than 100 families forced out of their homes.
