(CNN) -- Here's some background information about the 2016 Summer Olympics scheduled to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This is the first time the Olympics will be held in South America.
The Olympic Games are scheduled to be held August 5 - 21, 2016.
The Paralympic Games are scheduled to be held September 7 - 18, 2016.
Timeline: July 26, 2006 - Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Francisco are selected as the three American finalist cities to host the Games.
April 14, 2007 - Chicago is selected as the United States bid city.
September 4, 2007 - Chicago officially submits its bid to the International Olympic Committee.
September 13, 2007 - Six cities in total have made bids to the IOC: Chicago, Madrid, Rio de Janeiro, Tokyo, Doha (Qatar), Baku (Azerbaijan) and Prague.
June 4, 2008 - Chicago is among the four finalists for the 2016 Olympics.
February 12, 2009 - Chicago sends the IOC blueprints on how it would host the Olympic event.
June 17 - 18, 2009 - Each city makes a presentation to the IOC in Lausanne, Switzerland.
September 2, 2009 - The IOC Evaluation Commission report is released.
October 1, 2009 - President Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, and Olympic gymnast Nadia Comaneci are among those who travel to Copenhagen in support of the U.S./Chicago bid.
October 2, 2009 - The winning city, Rio de Janeiro, is announced in Copenhagen, Denmark.
June 7, 2011 - NBC and Comcast pay $4.38 billion for the rights to continue broadcasting the Olympic games for the next four years.
