CNN  — 

A new tropical depression formed Saturday in the Pacific Ocean off of the coast of Mexico and is expected to dump heavy rains near Acapulco by Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

The Mexican government issued a storm warning for the region and closed some ports.

Tropical Depression 17 is expected strengthen to near hurricane strength as early as Monday evening, as it edges close to the coastline. It is currently not projected to make landfall but to eventually turn back out to sea.
