(CNN) -- The photograph on the left, taken on April 22, 2009, shows Independence Square, also known as Maidan, in Kiev, Ukraine with the Monument to Berehynia in the center.

The second image was taken on February 20, 2014. It illustrates the damage and devastation caused by the clashes between protesters and the Ukrainian government that have left scores of people dead and hundreds injured.
