You've never seen boats look like this...

Photographer Alan Crowhurst tested the waters with a series of digitally enhanced images taken during this summer's famous Cowes Week in England. "A digital filtered look is so much more modern," Crowhurst tells CNN. "It gives so much punch to the picture."

"The filter that I use seems to suck everything out of the sky," explains Crowhurst. "If you've got a little bit of the sky, a few fluffy clouds, it super-enhances it all. You have a completely different looking picture."

Crowhurst shoots from a six-meter rib and has his own pilot, who he guides into position. "When I say drop me in front 200 yards, he speeds ahead and then we let the boats come straight towards us. I will shoot on a 500mm lens so I am looking straight down the bow and the boat dips in and out of the swirl"

Crowhurst uses a portable GoPro camera to capture the close-up action. "I lean over the side of the boat and hold the camera in both hands," he explains. "They are certainly the most dramatic photos. You've got water flicking over the top over the top of the lens but you can still clearly see the boat."

"It is pot luck what you get but if you position yourself correctly you fancy your chances of getting something dramatic," he adds.

Crowhurst is a specialist horse racing photographer but he sees parallels between racing and sailing. "There are so many angles and you don't really know what you're going to get," he explains. "Both sports are unpredictable."
