Teen was allegedly planning a terrorist act in Australia, officials say

"Our counterterrorism capabilities are well tested," deputy police commissioner says

CNN  —

Australian authorities charged a 17-year-old with terrorism offenses after a search in Victoria state found three bombs, police said Saturday.

The teen was allegedly planning a terrorist act in Australia.

The search occurred Friday at premises in Greenvale, and was conducted by state police and federal authorities.

Police transported the explosive devices to a park, where they were disabled during a controlled operation, authorities said.

Authorities disabled them due to an imminent threat to the community, said Robert Hill, acting deputy commissioner for Victoria police.

“What yesterday’s operation demonstrates is that we are ready,” he said. “Our actions were methodical, measured and precise.”

He said the joint operations will continue.

“Our counterterrorism capabilities are well tested and we will continue to work with our partner law enforcement agencies to detect and disrupt terrorism,” he said.
