Michael Alan Williamson was serving a life sentence

Police officer was stabbed at a Columbia Walmart

CNN  —

An escaped inmate suspected in the stabbing of a police officer while on the run is back in custody, Columbia, South Carolina, police said Thursday morning.

Michael Alan Williamson might have used a food truck when he escaped the McCormick County Correctional Facility on Wednesday, said a spokesman for the South Carolina Department of Corrections.

Williamson is believed to have traveled to Columbia, police said. They said Thursday Williamson is suspected of stabbing police officer Ashley Hardesty at a local Walmart.

Hardesty was responding to a suspicious person call on Wednesday evening “when she was stabbed multiple times in the upper body,” said police.

She is recovering from her injuries.

Williamson was serving a life sentence for armed robbery and assault and battery with intent to kill, police said. Columbia is approximately 84 miles east of McCormick.
