The Senate unanimously confirmed Andrew Cuomo as secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development on Jan. 29. Cuomo previously served as an undersecretary of HUD during President Bill Clinton's first term. He had announced plans to leave the government and head back to New York before Clinton nominated him to head the department. While some Republicans in Congress would like to dissolve this agency, Cuomo has said that he wants to pare HUD's workforce from 10,400 to 7,500 by 2000. Cuomo, 39, is the son of former New York Gov. Mario Cuomo. He succeeds Henry Cisneros, who left the administration for an executive position with Univision, the Spanish-language TV network. Updated Jan. 30
