SPEAKERS LIST: FORMER GOVERNOR CARROLL CAMPBELL (R-SC)

FDCH

CAMPBELL: Thank you very much.

(APPLAUSE)

I'm delighted to be here. Ladies and gentlemen, thank you. Thank you so much.

I want you to know that I'm proud to be with you tonight to talk about Bob Dole's economic plan. But before I do that, I'd like to take just a moment and ask you to get a little bit serious and think with me about the American Dream that we all have.

You know, it's a fairly simple dream. People want a place where they can live and they can work in an environment that's clean and safe and healthy. And they want to give their children a good election and a leg up on a better life. They want opportunity to work hard, to do well and to succeed.

But the pressures on families are increasing as government takes more and more in taxes, leaving less and less for families to spend on what they need. The people are telling us to cut taxes and to control spending.

But what did Bill Clinton do? He promised a middle class tax cut, but he delivered the biggest tax increase in history. Bill Clinton promised a balanced budget. But he vetoed the bill that would have accomplished it.

And still the people are demanding, cut the taxes and control the spending. Bill Clinton's policies are destroying the American dream, ladies and gentlemen. And we have to do something about it.

(APPLAUSE)

We have to stop Bill Clinton.

(APPLAUSE)

I submit to you that this American dream is one thing that this election is all about. Will the American dream flourish under Bob Dole? Or will we let it wither under Bill Clinton? My answer is let's go under Bob Dole and let it flourish.

(APPLAUSE)

It must flourish, ladies and gentlemen.

(APPLAUSE)

So, I'm particularly proud to be speaking tonight in support of Bob Dole's program to restore and to support the American dream, a program that cuts the taxes and controls the spending. Bob Dole's economic plan will spur this country to higher investment, to more and better jobs, to greater productivity and greater opportunity for all of our citizens. Bob Dole's program seeks to unite all Americans, not to divide us, as the Democrats would do. We are one people, ladies and gentlemen. We're not isolated in little cubicles.

(APPLAUSE)

We are Americans. And that's what we want.

(APPLAUSE)

America. With Bob Dole's plan for lower taxes and honest balanced budget and freedom from excessive government regulation, we will achieve higher economic growth. And we'll put more money in the hands of hard-working Americans.

Will it work? You bet it will work. Ronald Reagan knew it would work. His 1981 tax cuts grew the economy and created 20 million new jobs.

Now the Democrats are going to say, oh, but it didn't balance the budget. Well, let me let you in on a little secret. The Democrats were in control of the House of Representatives and they refused to keep their promise and control the spending.

But it's different today, ladies and gentlemen. How is it different? Now, we have a Republican Congress, a Republican Congress that will keep their promises with Bob Dole and Jack Kemp.

CAMPBELL: They are the ones that will cut the taxes. They are the ones that will control the spending.

Now I know that Bob Dole's plan will work. How do I know that? Because I used the very same tools in South Carolina.

Bob Dole's plan provides a fair and a simple across-the-board reduction in income tax rates, along with a tax credit for children and a capital gains tax cut.

In the same spirit, we cut taxes in South Carolina, and like Bob Dole, we used tax relief to strengthen families. We did this through a tax break for parents of children under six. And like Bob Dole's plan, we cut the capital gains tax.

And do you know what happened? We created 230,000 new, better- paying jobs and an unprecedented $22 billion in new investment in the small state of South Carolina.

Does it work? You bet it works. It will work again, too.

(APPLAUSE)

But let's look at it. Let's think though just a minute. Today a lot of Americans feel that they're squeezed in their jobs. They're anxious. They don't have enough free time. They don't have enough take-home pay. And many people are not convinced that they'll even have their jobs next year.

The facts speak for themselves. It's a fact that today's tax burden is at a record high. The typical family does pay more in taxes a year than it spends on food, clothing and shelter combined.

Ladies and gentlemen, that's unconscionable. It is absolutely unconscionable. But it's also a fact that the average worker's wages and benefits actually declined under Bill Clinton.

It's a fact that the average family worked seven days longer to pay their 1995 taxes than they did when Bill Clinton was elected. My gosh, if we elect him again, they may have to work a month to pay their taxes. We can't have that.

(APPLAUSE)

We've got to get him out of there.

(APPLAUSE)

Ladies and gentlemen, it is a fact that interest rates have jumped since Bill Clinton vetoed the Republican balanced budget plan. Now these are the facts, my friends. And they are not acceptable.

We will not accept them. We can do better. I know this. You know this. Bob Dole knows this. Our children deserve better. They deserve better than what they're getting today, and Bob Dole can see that they get it.

The Dole tax cut plan would put $1,272 a year to a family of four with an income of $30,000. That means that people will have more of their hard-earned money to spend on the things that they need for their families, and they can do it the way they want to, not the way the government thinks they ought to do it.

That's what America's about, ladies and gentlemen.

(APPLAUSE)

That's what it's all about.

(APPLAUSE)

Bob Dole -- ladies and gentlemen, Bob Dole has presented a plan to restore the American dream.

CAMPBELL: It addresses the hopes of hardworking Americans. He's heard the cry of "cut the taxes and control the spending". It will mean more investment, bringing good paying jobs and increased productivity. It will give Americans the opportunity to reach their own potential through their own talents and their own efforts.

Our question tonight is very simple. Will we look to the future with optimism or anxiety? I, for one, am looking to the future with optimism because Bob Dole has the character to restore our American dream.

What is character, ladies and gentleman? Thomas Paine said too many people are worried about reputation. Reputation is what men and women think of us. Character is what God and the angels know of us. And Bob Dole has character, ladies and gentleman. That's what we need is character.

(APPLAUSE)

So I'm asking you tonight, I'm asking you tonight to rededicate yourselves. Let's go out to the American people. Let's elect Bob Dole and Jack Kemp in November. Because let me tell you how serious it is. America, this is your future that's at stake and we want to help save it.

God bless America. God bless every one of you. And let's go Bob Dole.

(APPLAUSE)
