U.S. REPRESENTATIVE SUE MYRICK (R-NC)
U.S. REPRESENTATIVE GEORGE RADANOVICH (R-CA)
MYRICK: Hi, there.
(APPLAUSE)
MYRICK: Thank you. George and I represent the House
freshman class of the 104th Congress.
(APPLAUSE)
RADANOVICH: Sue, we made history taking back the Republican
House Congress for the first time in 40 years. We've been
called extremists, but I'll tell you what extreme is, Sue. It's
strapping future generations with massive debt.
MYRICK: George, we're the reformers. We're the ones that
forced Bill Clinton to the right.
(APPLAUSE)
We did exactly what the voters sent us to do. And you know
the American people aren't extremists. They just want some
relief from excessive taxation and intrusive government.
(APPLAUSE)
RADANOVICH: We have done what no other Congress has done in
a generation, despite the deception from the other party and
also the deception from the current occupant of the White House.
MYRICK: Personally, I am proud of our welfare reform bill.
It's going to give people a hand up not a handout. And you know
it's going to break the cycle of dependency and despair. And,
it will require able bodied people to work.
RADANOVICH: It will also preserve the safety net so the
truly needy people will get help when necessary.
MYRICK: We also passed telecommunications reform that's
going to create jobs. And we took action to protect our
nation's drinking water. And we passed legislation that's going
to make it harder for irresponsible lawyers to file frivolous
lawsuits.
(APPLAUSE)
The trials lawyers got invited to the White House for dinner.
And the American consumer was left holding the bag.
(APPLAUSE)
RADANOVICH: We also did great things for the American
family. For example, we passed health care insurance reform.
Now when working moms and dads change jobs, they'll be able to
take their health insurance with them.
MYRICK: We've even made Congress live by the same laws that
apply to everybody else.
(APPLAUSE)
RADANOVICH: Now that might not sound like a big deal to the
other Americans, but it's reverse business as usual in a
Congress that has grown detached from the American people. We
have given Congress a big dose of reality.
MYRICK: We've also passed the first balanced budget in a
generation. It's been 26 years since America last balanced the
budget. We just did what American families do every month.
RADANOVICH: That's right.
MYRICK: We balanced our budgets.
RADANOVICH: And the president vetoed it. The first balanced
budget in a generation and President Bill Clinton vetoed it.
That's right.
(APPLAUSE)
MYRICK: But all was not lost. You know, Congress was still
able to save the taxpayers billions of dollars. And we did it
by applying good old American common sense and logic.
(APPLAUSE)
RADANOVICH: In fact, we have saved the taxpayers $73 billion
by scaling back wasteful Washington spending.
MYRICK: Right, and we still have lots of work to do to bring
common sense back to Washington. We need to continue balancing
the budget and we need to continue giving tax relief to the
American families.
And we need to move the power out of Washington and back to
the people. And let the people keep more of their money and
their pockets.
(APPLAUSE)
And we are going to save Medicare. Unlike Bill Clinton, this
Congress understands their responsibility to the senior
citizens.
RADANOVICH: Sue, I look forward to working with you and the
rest of the freshman class for the remainder of this year, to
continue our efforts to bring common sense to Washington. But I
also look forward to next year when we will have Bob Dole as
president of the United States.
(APPLAUSE)
MYRICK: Bob Dole will sign a balanced budget. And Bob Dole
will bring tax relief to American families. And Bob Dole will
also make the federal government more effective, more efficient
and less costly to the American taxpayers.
(APPLAUSE)
RADANOVICH: This is the beginning of the end for the Clinton
White House. You, you, the American people sent the freshman
class to Washington to get the job done. But we cannot do it
alone. Send Bob Dole to the White House so that together we can
restore the American dream.
MYRICK: That's right, George. Nothing succeeds like ideas
when their time has come. And that's why so many people are
jumping Clinton's sinking ship and tying their hopes to the
Republican Party.
(APPLAUSE)
The Republicans have cleaned things up on Capitol Hill. We
restored sanity and common sense. And boy, did we clean house.
(APPLAUSE)
Ladies and gentlemen, America is coming home again, home to
the Republican Party.
(APPLAUSE)
Thank you.
