Pataki For President? "Premature."WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, Nov. 11) -- Dozens of "rather prominent" people are urging Republican New York Gov. George Pataki to run for president in 2000, The Associated Press reports his aides as saying. But his spokeswoman, Zenia Mucha, says such talk is "premature." And Pataki's having none of it. "To even think about that a week after the election is ridiculous," Pataki told AP. "I have one goal and that is to be the best governor I can be over the course of the next two years." Fla. Sen. Graham To Run AgainOPA-LOCKA, Fla. (AllPolitics, Nov. 11) -- Sen. Bob Graham (D-Fla.) will run for re-election in 1998, he said today, ending speculation that he might run for governor of Florida when Democrat Lawton Chiles retires. "I have concluded that I can be of the greatest service to the people of this state in the period after 1998 by continuing to serve in the United States Senate," he told a small crowd at an elementary school near Miami. Graham served two terms as governor from 1978 to 1986. RNC Chair Up For GrabsCONCORD, N.H. (AllPolitics, Nov. 11) -- Retiring New Hampshire Gov. Steve Merrill says he'll decide within the next week whether he'll run for chairman of the Republican National Committee. Current RNC Chairman Haley Barbour decided not to pursue another two-year term in the $175,000 job. Michiganders Betsi DuVoss and Charles Yob are also said to be interested in the post. |
