![]() Race To Replace Richardson Takes Shape![]() SANTA FE, N.M. (AllPolitics, Jan. 8) -- In the contest for the congressional seat soon to be vacated by Rep. Bill Richardson (D-N.M.), New Mexico's Corporation Commissioner Eric Serna is emerging as the likely Democratic nominee. According to a letter from Democratic Party officials, Serna has the support of at least 45 of the 3rd congressional district's 89 central committee delegates, giving him the needed votes to gain the party's nomination. After President Bill Clinton nominated Richardson for the post of U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Serna and three other Democrats all declared their intention to run for the seat. Richardson plans to resign pending his Senate confirmation for the ambassadorship. |
