Poll: New Yorkers Strongly Support Pataki

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, Feb. 7) -- New Yorkers are generally pleased with the performance of GOP Gov. George Pataki at the halfway point in his term, according to a new poll.

Fully 54 percent of those polled said Pataki was doing a good or excellent job, while 46 percent said his performance was fair or poor.

"If Pataki's job approval remains where it is, I think he's in real good shape next year," pollster Del Ali told The Associated Press. "I think this is a very good approval rating."

Poll

Pataki's numbers are far better than they were a year ago, when only 34 percent of those polled thought his performance was good or excellent.

But even now, only 40 percent of those polled said they would vote for him if the election were held today, while 41 percent would consider another candidate and 19 percent would vote against him.

The poll of 807 registered voters was conducted Feb. 1-3 and has a margin of error of +/- 3.5 percentage points. It was sponsored by the Buffalo News, the New York Post, and seven upstate television stations.
