For 2000, Powell's No. 1 With GOP Voters

It's the general, Kemp and Dole (Elizabeth, that is) in an early preference survey.

poll

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, Feb. 21) -- Gen. Colin Powell leads what probably will be a wide-open race for the Republican presidential nomination in 2000, according to a new survey of GOP voters.

Powell topped the preference poll with the support of 22 percent of GOP voters, followed by Jack Kemp at 14 percent and Elizabeth Dole at 12 percent.

Other possibilities who picked up some support in the survey were former Vice President Dan Quayle at 9 percent; Texas Gov. George W. Bush, 7 percent; magazine publisher Steve Forbes, 6 percent; and conservative commentator Pat Buchanan, 4 percent. Both Forbes and Buchanan ran last year.

Twelve percent of those surveyed were undecided, and several other possible candidates received only token support. One who barely registered was former Tennessee governor Lamar Alexander.

For people who picked other candidates as their favorite, Powell trailed Elizabeth Dole as the leading second choice: 14 percent of respondents put him in that category. Dole, wife of 1996 GOP presidential nominee Bob Dole and president of the American Red Cross, was the second choice of 19 percent of those polled, while 12 percent listed Kemp as their second choice.

Some of the poll's underlying numbers don't bode well for Quayle or Buchanan, who have a base in the party's conservative wing. Thirty-five percent of those surveyed said there was no way they would support Buchanan, while 24 percent said that about Quayle. In contrast, only 15 percent said they would not support Kemp, the party's vice presidential nominee last year, under any circumstances.

The survey of 830 Republican voters across the nation was conducted Feb. 8-10 by pollster Anthony Fabrizio and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
