![]() Lott: Big Gifts 'The American Way'![]() PALM BEACH, Fla. (AllPolitics, Feb. 21) -- Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott appealed to patriotism Thursday in defending unlimited gifts made to political parties. Such gifts, he said, are "the American way." The Mississippi Republican is presiding over a meeting of his party's major givers, dubbed "Team 100," at The Breakers, a Florida resort. "This meeting is an effort to work with those that support Republican candidates and encourage them to do so," Lott said, "and I think it's the right thing to do." Lott says he opposes Democratic efforts to institute public financing of campaigns. "We need a way to get our message to the American people," Lott said. "But we're not for food stamps for politicians; we don't think public financing of campaigns is a good idea." |
