Poll: Clinton's Support SofteningFund-raising controversy taking its toll, suggests Washington Post/ABC News surveyWASHINGTON (AllPolitics, March 11) -- The drumbeat of controversy over the Democratic Party's fund-raising may be beginning to take its toll on President Bill Clinton's popularity, according to a new poll. The president's approval rating dropped to 55 percent from 60 percent in late January, according to a Washington Post/ABC News poll released today. Clinton's approval also seems to be slipping in specific areas as well; 55 percent approve of his handling of the economy, compared to 61 percent in late January, and 50 percent approve of his handling of foreign affairs, compared to 54 percent in late January. But the president still outpolls the rest of the Washington crowd. Asked who they would trust to handle the nation's major problems, Clinton was preferred over the Republicans in Congress, 49-38 percent. These numbers are close to those in a CNN/TIME poll taken last month. Fully 84 percent of those polled had heard of the controversy over campaign contributors staying overnight in the White House's Lincoln Bedroom and attending White House coffees. Less than a third thought Clinton had done anything illegal in the matter: 17 percent of Democrats, 31 percent of independents and 50 percent of Republicans. The Post/ABC poll of 1,004 adults was conducted March 6-9, and has a margin of error of +/- 4 percentage points. |
