Dole Cites 'Creeping Cynicism'
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AllPolitics, April 16) -- Elizabeth Dole may be "the Dole who may yet reside at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue," former GOP candidate Bob Dole told a standing room only crowd at Harvard University on Tuesday. "But I think it's a little bit early right now" to say if she's running, he added. Dole was armed with yet more self-deprecatory quips, noting, "I did everything during the election -- I even fell down," referring to his tumble off a campaign stage. He also had a more somber message, identifying a "creeping cynicism" in America "rooted in public dissatisfaction over politics." And, he decried the huge sums needed to mount a national campaign, which, he said, are too heavily focused on imagery over substance.
WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, April 16) -- The White House has confirmed that first daughter Chelsea Clinton visited Princeton University over the past weekend. This was Chelsea's second trip to the Ivy League school, having first checked it out last summer. The college-bound high school senior has made the rounds of many fine universities but has yet to disclose -- at least publicly -- her first choice.
Republicans Duke Out Anchorage Mayoral Race
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AllPolitics, April 16) -- Two Republicans vied for favor on Tuesday in a crowed mayoral field of 10, with incumbent Mayor Rick Mystrom prevailing over a more conservative second-place finisher, Tom Fink. Mystrom took 54 percent to Fink's 42 percent, with the remaining eight splitting the remainder.
More Trouble For Mel Reynolds
CHICAGO (AllPolitics, April 16) -- Former Rep. Mel Reynolds, already in prison on sex charges, was convicted today of lying to obtain personal loans and misusing campaign funds. The disgraced Chicago Democrat, who is serving a five-year sentence for engaging in sex with an underage campaign volunteer, was found guilty in federal court on 15 of the 16 counts against him. The 45-year-old Reynolds was accused of lying to banks and a mortage company and establishing bogus ward organizations to launder illegal campaign contributions. He blamed aides and accused his estranged wife of lying to the Federal Election Commission. Reynolds resigned in 1995, after being convicted of having sex with a 16-year-old girl.
