Poll: Clinton's Approval Suffering LittleBut many think his ethics are lower than Bush, Reagan or Carter'sWASHINGTON (AllPolitics, April 21) -- Despite the focus in recent months on the ever-growing number of accusations of illegal or improper Democratic campaign fund-raising, President Bill Clinton's approval rating is suffering little, according to the latest poll. In a CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll, the president still enjoys a 54 percent approval rating, while only 28 percent of Americans consider the current allegations to be of "great importance" to the nation. - More - But Clinton's ethical standards did not compare favorably to most of his recent predecessors. Those surveyed consider George Bush, Ronald Reagan, and Jimmy Carter to be Clinton's superiors, ethics-wise. Only Richard Nixon's were judged "lower." - More - And a majority think that Attorney General Janet Reno should appoint an independent counsel to look into the charges. - More - Meanwhile, 63 percent of the public thinks that the House Ethics Committee should allow House Speaker Newt Gingrich to proceed with the plan announced last week to take a personal loan from Bob Dole in order to pay his $300,000 penalty. - More - The survey of 1,003 adult Americans was conducted April 18-20 and has a margin of error of +/- 3 percentage points. |
