Comedian Pat Paulsen Dead At 69

LOS ANGELES (AllPolitics, April 25) -- Comedian and politician Pat Paulsen, 69, died today in Mexico from kidney failure and pneumonia, according to his spokesman, Glenn Schwartz.

His wife, three children and a brother and sister were at his bedside at the time of his death. Paulsen was diagnosed with inoperable brain and colon cancer a year and a half ago. The comedian was seeking alternative treatment in Mexico.

Paulsen is best known as a writer and a cast member of the original Smothers Brothers variety show and for his numerous, tongue-in-cheek runs for president.

Paulsen's comic political career ran long after the Smothers Brothers show became television history. Paulsen ran in five presidential races, representing the Straight-Talking American Government -- or "STAG" -- Party. His showing in 1992 was one of his best.

Paulsen lived in California's wine country where he produced award-winning vintages once his attention turned away from his humorous political career.
