Gavel To Gavel: Fund-Raising Hearings

Here are some highlights from Thursday's session of the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee's campaign finance hearings:

'I'm having a hard time understanding'

"I'm having a hard time understanding what you are saying in light of what you said. ... You were asked the question, 'Was it unusual to make such a big point with a new fund-raiser having, needing to have, extensive training?' ... You said this situation with Mr. Huang in your deposition was unusual." (224K wav sound)

-- Sen. Fred Thompson (R-Tenn.)

'I would have personally walked him to the elevator'

"If I had had any inclination that John Huang would raise foreign money, I would have personally walked him to the elevator and out of the building." (192K wav sound)

-- Former DNC finance director Richard Sullivan

'Mr. Gandhi has now taken the Fifth'

"Would it surprise you to know that committee investigators have uncovered a wire transfer from a Japanese bank for this amount into Mr. Gandhi's personal account and furthermore that Mr. Gandhi has now taken the 5th? Would it surprise you to learn that?" (384K wav sound)

-- Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine)

'Taking money from the Chinese and giving it to the DNC'

"Were you concerned when Mr. Chung wanted to go into the radio address? Were you concerned that he might have been taking money from the Chinese and giving it to the DNC?"

-- Sen. Fred Thompson (R-Tenn.)

'It's not as bad as it could be'

"There's an understandable and obvious kind of tension and unease here. But it's not as bad as it could be. Basically, this is a very political investigation, because we're investigating political fund-raising. And unlike normal investigations of this committee, which might be looking at government waste or corporate fraud, this is the system that we all live in that we're investigating. And there are political consequences. ... There's a certain amount of playing prosecutor and defense counsel going on here."

-- Sen. Joseph Lieberman (D-Conn.), commenting on the tone of the hearings so far
