Sonny Bono's Widow To Seek His Congressional Seat

LOS ANGELES (AllPolitics, Jan. 22) -- Mary Bono, Sonny Bono's widow, will run for her husband's congressional seat.

Bono will announce her candidacy formally on Feb. 2 at a series of press conferences in California's 44th District.

"The past two weeks have been the most difficult and trying of my entire life," Bono said in a statement. "I want to thank my family, friends, and thousands of people who have expressed their sympathy and support during this tragic time."

Bono said local party members and members of Congress urged her to run.

"Prior to reaching this decision, I have had many in-depth conversations with my family and close friends," she said. "We all agreed Sonny would have encouraged me to continue his work. I want to do that."

A special election is scheduled for April 7.

Bono said she is planning a memorial service for her husband in Washington on Jan. 28.
