Details Of A Settlement Offer
What Jones' lawyers offered Clinton late last year
By Bob Franken/CNN
WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, Jan. 27) -- CNN has confirmed the details of an out-of-court settlement offered late last year to President Bill Clinton by Paula Jones' lawyers.
It would consist of the following terms: the president would not have to confirm Jones' charges; the president would have to design a statement on White House stationery, which would read: "I do not deny meeting her in a hotel room. This meeting occurred at my request and my initiation. I apologize for any inappropriate intentions manifested. I believe Paula Jones to be a truthful person. Neither I or anyone else will say anything else."
Clinton would have read the statement at a press conference on December 18, 1997. The president would also have to pay Jones $2.6 million, a figure subsequently reduced to $2 million.
The proposal was rejected outright by the president's lawyer, Bob Bennett.
