White House Scandal At A Glance: Jan. 28
Latest developments:
- Monica Lewinsky's lawyer, William Ginsburg, says if independent counsel Kenneth Starr indicts his client "we are prepared to defend her." He says negotiations on immunity for Lewinsky with Starr are "status quo." Ginsburg again confirmed Lewinsky had an affair with former teacher in Oregon. He said Lewinsky was "a bit upset" by the disclosures of Andy Bleiler.
- Representatives for the Secret Service met with Starr Tuesday to discuss a possible subpoena of agents guarding the president. They are concerned such testimony would strain the relationship with the president, jeopardizing the safety of commander-in-chief.
- Former White House Chief of Staff Leon Panetta appears before the Whitewater grand jury. He was in charge of the staff when Monica Lewinsky was an intern.
- First lady Hillary Clinton asks Americans to "take a deep breath," promising the truth will come out but that the president won't be making comment soon because of investigation. She repeated the assertion that a right-wing conspiracy was behind attacks. The first lady also described Tuesday night's State of the Union speech as a "triumph."
